Disclaimer: Vitamin D is very complex, with hundreds of different structures, and science is still a long way from fully understanding it. I am certainly no expert, but this article has links to many experts if you want their insights. My purpose is to put things in layman’s terms, and present some observations for discussion.
Do you know that there are people on a 70% fat diet that are skinny?! This sounds crazy in our world of ‘low fat’ diets. However, it is in fact a healthy natural diet, and there are some very interesting things that it reveals.
What makes the body store fat, or what makes us fat? It is a complicated answer, but one thing we do know – healthy fat does not make us fat.
People on a diet that is high in healthy fats tend to have lean bodies. Why? According to the experts, one reason is because the body does not need to store fat if it is getting a regular supply. There are many other reasons of course, but that statement is what I want to focus on in this post.
(A) If the body is getting enough healthy fat, it will NOT store it. And the reverse is also true:
(B) If the body does not get enough healthy fat, it WILL try to store it. (And thus many people on low fat diets cannot get rid of the extra fat). And…
(C) If the body is getting too much bad fat, it will store fat – because (perhaps) it is still not getting enough good fat. (And we will also find the bad fat in the blood and elsewhere in the body. Not good).
The body is a highly efficient system that responds and adapts very well to the environment, so it makes sense. And we see this all the time in people, so I have no reason to doubt this.
So let’s now extrapolate that concept to vitamin D…
Testing for vitamin D levels is notoriously tricky. Or, more accurately, interpreting test results is tricky. Consider these points:
– Products with synthetic vitamins can show high levels of Vit D in lab tests, and in blood tests, and yet a patient can still exhibit Vit D deficiency (or toxicity!). How and why is this possible?
Short answer: The vitamin D gets absorbed into the bloodstream, but it is not absorbed by the cells in the body that need it – because it is not the ‘correct’ Vitamin D that the cells needs. The result might be similar to the fat effects of (C) above.
The long answer is far more complicated, as there is tremendous interaction between various nutritional elements (Vit A, K2, etc.) that impact Vit D’s various roles in the body.
Experts can argue forever about the various tests and the meaning of their results.
– Now consider what happens when some people take Green Pasture Fermented Cod Liver Oil. This bioactive natural product has a very complex Vitamin D profile that is not easy to measure in product testing. Test results vary, and do not always range high for any specifically identified Vitamin D complex. The same is true with the blood tests, and in fact, some people note lower Vitamin D blood levels after taking this product. However, patients exhibit exceptional Vitamin D health, which is demonstrated in their bodies ability to rapidly heal tooth decay and repair various other health issues in the body.
Healing cavities sounds like science fiction to most people. Most modern dentists say it is impossible. But it is in fact an absolute innate part of our human biology. Nothing magical about it at all… except that the modern diet has completely shut down that system in most modern people. Or, I should say, people on a modern diet. The modern diet simply does not provide the nutrition needed to heal our teeth.
Vitamin companies have been pushing their products for decades. But none of them ever promoted claims of healing teeth. And that is because they simply could not. This is very telling about the usefulness of synthetic vitamins. Just like the good fat vs. bad fat analogy. Not all fats are equal. Not all Vit D is equal. And thus the ‘secret’ of healing teeth remained known to very few outside of the Weston A. Price circles, where it is common knowledge.
Healing teeth requires natural, nutrient rich foods. And with those being hard to come by, some ‘superfoods’ can sometimes fill the gap. Dr. Weston A. Price noted a hundred years ago that the combination of cod liver oil and high vitamin butter oil were did an amazing job of providing the nutritional profile needed to heal cavities. And countless people have been confirming that for the last hundred years or so.
Sadly, modern CLO has fallen pray to modern industrial practices, and the CLO today is loaded with synthetic vitamins after it has been stripped of its natural nutrients during heavy processing. Thus, most CLO on the market no longer has the ability to help us heal cavities.
All stories of natural tooth healing that I hear about are centered around the Green Pasture FCLO products, and an exceptional natural diet (i.e. under the Weston A. Price dietary guidelines).
In my own personal experience I have seen the FCLO and Butter Oil combo products from Green Pastures heal my cavities. And I have done this repeatedly, as I am rather lazy and will lapse in my diet from time to time. I do not always take these ‘superfoods’ as some do, but rather rely on them when my diet is lacking. Their impact on my health still boggles my mind.
I have tried to repeat this success with supplements, but have never been successful. A good diet can do it, and really, if you have access to truly good food, you should not need these superfoods. Then again, these days we consider raw milk a superfood.
A combination that is similar in its nutritional profile to the FCLO & BO products is Natto and Ghee. And of course there are countless other ways to get the nutrition we need, which is the beauty of Dr. Weston A. Price’s work. He traveled the world and found perfect health among a great many diets. He was then able to distill the common factors from those diets and identify the key elements (i.e. It K2) that were essential for good health. Thus, the dietary guidance provided by the foundation is not a diet per se, but a guide that helps us understand good and bad food choices, and how to get those key elements. It is not just the elements, but also the specific combinations of them.
